I've been wondering if we'll another Bembe Orisha tour?? I really enjoyed Barney Doyle's playing and it was sweet having Bobby Vega along for the ride as well!

Had a fabulous time at the Rex benefit last night. Mickey's new group, Bembe Orisha, was up first, and I loved, loved, LOVED them! I really think this might be his best post-GD group yet. And then there are the best remnants of his last year's more pop-oriented group, singer Bobbi Cespedes and guitarist Barney Doyle, who I just think is fantastic. Doyle definitely has some Garcia in his veins, but he's still an original player and he attacks his leads fearlessly (a la Garcia); there's nothing at all tentative about him and I love that. he knows where he wants to go and he goes there with confidence and a certain abandon; very good for this kind of music. The other two new elements were slide guitar wizard Roy Rogers (I don't think he's a regular in the group, but he should be!) who had a number of jaw-droppingly great solos and little duels with Barney

What's Barney Doyle been doing lately? I was real impressed with his guitar playing in the MHB.

Kimock sat in with the MHB at the Marin show I saw, and that Barney Doyle can play a mean guitar, too.

Fun time at BB King's last night to wrap up the tour. Barney Doyle often created a steel-drum-like sound with his guitar which blended very nicely with the percussion ensemble.

"Life, Music and the Pursuit of Happiness", a special evening to benefit the Rex Foundation Marin Civic Auditorium, San Rafael CA Friday March 28, 2003. Mickey Hart and Friends (Nick Beard, Linda Tillery, Bobi Cespedes, Bobby Vega, Greg Ellis, Azam Ali, Roy Rogers, Barney Doyle and Sikiru Adepoju)
Just wanted to say I had a great time at the Rex show the other night.
I totally got off on Mickey's band once again. (I just dig what they do, and the combination of slide guitarist Roy Rogers--truly one of the greats--with Barney Doyle, who's one of the best of the influenced-by-Garcia guitarists (Barry Sless is my other favorite in that category) is awesome. Great vocalists in that group. Really fine, hypnotic set.
